A very brief note on glassmaking in Venice Massimo Vignelli  1931–2014

In the early days of my career, my basic design culture was rooted in the predicament of the Bauhaus with a strong belief in design for mass production rather than for the few. My long exposure to the making of Murano’s glass at Venini gave me the opportunity to revise and further articulate my approach to design. Working closely with glass and silver made me understand better the nature of craftsmanship, shifting my feelings somehow closer to the Wiener Werkstätte than the Bauhaus. My passion for materials and their properties goes back to those times.
