Luca Vignelli photographs people, places and things. Since opening his studio in New York City in 1986, he has shot portraiture, interiors, landscapes, and still lifes for editorial and commercial advertising use, and longer term projects such as photo essays, books, and film documentaries.

Luca Vignelli has been commissioned by some of the world’s most prominent architects to do their portraits, among whom are Philip Johnson, I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Charles Gwathmey and Robert Siegel, Richard Rogers, Santiago Calatrava, Daniel Libeskind, and the partnerships of Kohn Pederson Fox. He has travelled the world to make photographic portraits on location of over one hundred of the world’s most important architects, a body of work that is represented by the Esto Photographics agency and due to be published in a book entitled Faces of Contemporary Architecture.

Among Mr. Vignelli’s latest projects is Sapori di Campania, an almost encyclopedic photographic portrait of the finest chefs of southern Italy’s Campania region, their restaurants, and the region’s gastronomic treasures. Mr. Vignelli apprenticed with the master black and white printer “Ciccio” Ivan Dalla Tana in his studio at P.S.1. During the work-study program at Bennington College, Mr. Vignelli assisted Henry Wolf. Mr. Vignelli then went on to complete his professional education at The Art Center College Of Design in Pasadena, California.

Piera Brunetta was born in Treviso, Italy. Self-taught, she took up graphic design at a relatively early age. After working for several small companies, she transferred in 1993 to Fabrica (United Colors of Benetton), completing fashion and product catalogs for Benetton, Sisley, 012, Rollerblade, Nordica and others. There she met Massimo Vignelli and moved to New York in 1998 to join Vignelli Associates, with whom she worked until 2003 in New York and for another year in Italy. In 2005 she returned to Benetton as Senior Designer where she continues to work today in the Graphic Communication Department.

Steve Engert has been contributing design, photography, and technical advisement to Olnick Spanu since 2014.

He is primarily a designer, working across many disciplines to create books, branding, websites, and more. Originally from Western New York, he has lived and worked in San Francisco, and is currently based in New York City.

Massimo Vignelli studied architecture in Milan and Venice. While in Venice as a student, he worked for Venini from 1953 to 1957, designing lighting fixtures, glass windows, drinking glasses, and pitchers. Most of the pieces he designed are today in museum collections, notably the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Montreal, Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, and others. A monographic exhibition of the Vignellis’ work toured Europe between 1989 and 1993. Based in New York, Massimo Vignelli works in the whole field of design, from graphic identity programs to publications, from products in glass, china, silver, and plastic to furniture and interiors. His work has been widely recognized by museums, publications and exhibitions throughout the world. Among Massimo Vignelli’s impressive awards are: the Gran Premio Triennale di Milano, 1964; Compasso d’Oro, 1964 and 1998; the AIA 1973 Industrial Arts Medal; the Art Directors Club 1982 Hall of Fame; the 1983 AIGA Gold Medal; the first Presidential Design Award; the Interior Design Hall of Fame, 1988; the National Arts Club Gold Medal for Design, 1991; the Interior Product Designers Fellowship of Excellence, 1992; and the Brooklyn Museum Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, 1995. He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Architecture from the University of Venice, Italy, and Honorary Doctorates in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and Corcoran School of Art. In 1996 he received the Honorary Royal Designer for Industry Award from the Royal Society of Arts, London.

Yoshiki Waterhouse   April 20, 2015

Yoshiki Waterhouse has directed design for Olnick Spanu since 2012, following the footsteps of his mentor of fifteen years, Massimo Vignelli.

His wide-ranging work for Vignelli Associates includes the redesign of the New York City Subway Diagram for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Weekender website and mobile app, the redesign of The New Yorker magazine, and the signage programs for the Asia Society and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which won an SEGD Honor Award. His work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Waterhouse recently designed the MTA’s Regional Transit Diagram, New York and New Jersey’s first interagency map of public transit, which was introduced for the 2014 Super Bowl. Along with his partner Beatriz Cifuentes he founded the design firm Waterhouse Cifuentes Design and launched SuperWarmRed Designs, an online platform that conceives and manufactures timeless products across multiple scales and disciplines.

Mr. Waterhouse holds degrees in architecture from Yale and Harvard, where he was the recipient of the Peter Rice Internship at Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Araldo Cossutta Prize for Design Excellence.

Lella Vignelli was born in Udine. She received a degree from the School of Architecture, University of Venice, and became a registered architect in Milan in 1962. In 1958, she received a tuition fellowship as a special student at the School of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. In 1959, Ms. Vignelli joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Chicago, as an architect in the interiors department. The following year, with Massimo Vignelli, she established the Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture in Milan.

In 1971, the Vignellis established Vignelli Associates in New York, where Lella Vignelli was initially Executive Vice President, and then Chief Executive Officer. Seven years later, they formed Vignelli Designs, a company dedicated to product and furniture design.

Mrs. Vignelli’s work is widely featured in design publications in the United States and abroad. Examples of her work have been included in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Montreal, and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.

Mrs. Vignelli has been the recipient of many awards including: The Industrial Arts Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1973), the AIGA Gold Medal (1983), National Arts Club Gold Medal for Design (1991), the Interior Product Designers Fellowship of Excellence (1992), The Brooklyn Museum Design Award for Lifetime Achievement (1995), The Russel Wright Award for Design Excellence (2001), The National Design Museum Lifetime Achievement Award (2003), The Architectural Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2005).
