Paolo Canevari, Souvenir, 2014–2015
Souvenir is the title of the artwork by Paolo Canevari commissioned by Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu for the 2015 Olnick Spanu Art Program. The work is composed of three metal, larger-than-life silhouetted she-wolves developed from scans of Canevari’s hand drawings. These were produced in Cold Spring, NY by Tino Yannitelli and Edward Jani Cekici of 301 East Inc, and by David Haines at Infra-Metals Co. in Wallingford, CT.
Born and raised in Rome, Canevari often integrates icons from Italian history into his art. In Souvenir the artist pays homage to the she-wolf, the quintessential symbol of the Roman Empire. Deploying the most minimalist of means, Canevari not only memorializes a significant moment in Italian history but also beautifully integrates this motif into its natural surroundings in the Hudson Valley. Souvenir is a monumental sculpture that not only takes the viewer by surprise but also continues to resonate long after.
